GIZ Training of Plant Protection Officers from Somalia on Pest Risk Analysis (PRA), Diagnosis of the Agricultural Pests, and the Import, and Export at the Entry Points at from 18th November to 13th December, 2024

The Centre of Phytosanitary Excellence (COPE), in collaboration with KEPHIS, is conducting three specialized trainings (Pest Risk Analysis (PRA), Diagnosis of Agricultural Pests, and Import and Export Procedures at Entry Points) to 4 plant protection officers from Somalia from November 18 to December 13, 2024. The trainings are held at KEPHIS HQ, but the trainees will also go for field visits.

 Training on Pest Risk Analysis (PRA)

The training is being conducted on 1 trainee and it focuses on developing skills in assessing pest risks, formulating phytosanitary measures, and conducting PRA aligned with international trade standards. The trainee is expected to participate in practical sessions and field visits in Kakuzi Farm, Sunripe Limuru, MOFARM, Woodtex, KEPHIS Muguga (PQBS), and KEPHIS JKIA to make them gain hands-on experience. This training aims at enhancing Somalia’s capacity to manage pest risks and facilitate safe agricultural trade.  

Training on Diagnosis of Agricultural Pests

The training is being conducted at KEPHIS HQ on 2 plant protection officers from Somalia. The training combines theoretical lessons and practical exercises in nematology, mycology, bacteriology, and virology. Field visits at KEPHIS Muguga (PQBS) will offer hands-on exposure to the trainees to advanced diagnostic techniques such as molecular methods and rapid diagnostic kits. This training aims to strengthen Somalia's capacity to identify and manage agricultural pests effectively.

Training on Import and Export at Entry Points

This training is being done on 1 plant protection officer. It focuses on regulations, documentation, and inspection processes required for safe agricultural trade. Practical field visits to different areas; KEPHIS Mombasa, KEPHIS JKIA, Selecta GMBH, Syngenta Kenya Quarantine Facility, Naivasha MLN, Woodtex, Ngong Veg, Redland Roses, Tamia will provide real-world insights. This training focuses on equipping Somalia with the expertise to streamline trade processes and uphold international phytosanitary standards.
